Fessing up...

After an awful lot of agonizing thought and discussion, R and I have made the decision to come home to Portland. We actually made the decision a while ago, but I've kept it off the blog. Now that our leave date is so close (March 30th) it's hard to blog without referencing it. Besides, we've told some folks, but they also read the blog, where it hasn't been mentioned, so it was getting confusing.

The homesickness was simply too much for us. It wasn't that we would occasionally feel homesick, our homesickness ranged daily from merely noticeable to totally unbearable, but it was never absent. We were unhappy. R wasn't getting the education he wanted, my job wasn't a dream job, and Suva's a hard place to make a home. Life is too short to spend somewhere where you are unhappy. Especially when you have a home to go home to.

Sobosobo Rose. I'm sorry to hear that Suva hasn't turned out great for you. I find the incessant dampness difficult in Suva. The humidity gets to me. Lautoka and Labasa are much easier places to live. Best of luck in your decision anyway.

Thank you for your support. It was a difficult decision to make. Funny thing is that Portland is even damper than Suva, but it doesn't seem to have the same wierd mold that will grow on absolutely anything. That is something I will not miss.

Sorry to hear your decision. Will you still update your blog?

Rain in Suva and there's rain in Oregon. Fungus grows in humid environment. Happens also when air-dries their clothes. Rain gets to the clothese after it has dried. That causes fungus growth.

Best way to get rid of the fungus on your clothes. Tons of bleach.

I can deal with the mold on clothes, it's when it shows up on shoes, bags, cast iron cookwear, home electronics, all surfaces vertical or horizontal. I'll try to keep up blogging, but without the Fiji hook I don't know if anybody really want to read about sandwiches and cats.

Hey there...just found your blog. I am a Canadian (from the actual 'great white north' of Yellowknife, NWT, living in Nadi for the last 3+ years. It has also been a difficult adjustment to feel at 'home' for us too. My husbands job keeps him busy and in the company of tourists who are familiar (and sound familiar) with North America. I think that helps ease to homesickness. I am fairly busy with 3 little boys and that definately helps. BUT. there are still those times that, like Simon and Garfunkals tune goes 'my thoughts are racing home, homeward bound'. I think it has taken us this long to feel settled in yet we still yearn for the familiar sights, sounds, tastes, accents, foods, roads, and dare I say it? INFRASTRUCTURE??? of home. from medical to dental to brand names of diapers, I miss my creature comforts but with no plans to leave and yet, no plans to stay, I guess we just tend not to focus on where we aren't and plan for where we are. Hopping over to Natadola used to help but now with all those resorts going in it a real shame to lose the essence of what that area was to me. natural. untouched. non-westernized and plain. not sure what we will use for a distraction now! best of luck in Portland. I think if there was a Wal-mart here, I could survive another 3+ years! ;)
